1952년 8월 13일 서울특별시에서 태어났다. 청소년 시절에 서울 YMCA가 운영하던 청소년 쉼터 "청개구리"를 다녔는데 그곳에서 만난 사람이 바로 양희은의 음악인생에 중대한 영향을 끼친 인물인 김민기였다. 김민기가 없었다면 현재의 양희은은 없었다고 할 수 있다.

아버지가 육군 대령이었으나, 39세의 나이로 일찍 사망하고 어머니가 보증을 잘못 선데다가 어머니의 가게인 양장점이 홀라당 타버리는 바람에 집안이 기울어 대학시절 끼니는 물론이고 교통비조차 없어서 걸어다녔다고 한다. 때문에 먹고 살기 위해 노래를 해야만했고 무대에 올려 달라고 부탁했던 사람이 바로 송창식이었다고 한다.
